Welcome to eXXit, the web site designed to help you stand strong in the face of sexual temptation.

Passage: Psalm 1:1-5*

1. How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the path of sinners,
Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!

2. But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.

3. And he will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water,
Which yields its fruit in its season,
And its leaf does not wither;
And in whatever he does, he prospers.

4. The wicked are not so,
But they are like chaff which the wind drives away.

5. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

Questions

1. Are you afraid of a final judgment before God?

2. Are you more proud of passing a difficult class with a good grade, or by having had good attendance in a pass/fail course?

3. Do you think sporting events would be as popular if no one kept score?

Practical help

When we duck into dark places to sneak peeks at porn, we are hoping not to be exposed. The truth of the matter is that there will come a time when the tapes are played back and God will be able to ask us questions.

This verse 5 seems like bad news, but it really isn’t. In the first place it tells us that our lives are important to God. If they were not, He wouldn’t bother with judgment. Secondly, the trees stand, not because they did super-tree things, but because God loved and nourished them. From this we can deduce a third truth, and that is the judgment is not about us only or even primarily, it is also about God.

How many times have you sworn using God’s name. When you have done this as a casual act, you were in effect saying to God, "You are worthless and I despise You." Some day you will be able to say it to His face. You will stand before Him to render a judgment of Your own. However, when that day actually arrives, you will be blown away by the reality of His goodness. In comparison you will see your own condition as a person who foolishly chose his own way in life thumbing his nose at God’s offer of love and relationship. Note that the verse actually says the wicked will not stand in judgment. When guilt is obvious, there is no trial, only sentencing.

So where will sinners go? This verse does not say, so it’s a little off today’s subject. But it does say they will not be with the righteous. Note again that the righteous were simply people who chose to accept God's offer, thus they were covered by His righteousness. Someday, if you so choose, the friends you will make, will be true ones who love the things you love. So go back to the first verse of Psalm 1 and remember to choose good friends and counselors now. It makes an eternal difference.
