In J.B. Phillips' classic book "Your God Is Too Small," he
tackles some of the misguided notions we have about the identity of the deity. Examples:
God as Papa Bear and God as Wild-eyed Zealot. By tearing down these outmoded ideas,
Phillips hopes to broaden our theology -- and our relationship with the true God.
This passage in Genesis aims for the same target. Long-in-the-tooth
Sarah laughs at the notion of bearing a child, even if an emissary from the Almighty says
so. The response? A sharp retort: "Is anything too hard for the LORD?"
Porn addicts, take note. If an old woman can bear a child, we can
tackle our struggles with success. If you're still in doubt, remember Phillips'
