Passage: 1 John 1:8-9*

8. If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.

9. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Questions

1. When was the last time you took a look at your life honestly to identify areas of weakness or sin?

2. When was the last time you judged another for not dealing with his or her sin?

Practical help

The only ones who don’t believe they have sin in their lives are babies and the self-deceived among us. And one of the biggest sins is the failure to agree with God about our sin problem. It’s human nature to think we are better than we really are. It’s a survival mechanism, actually. But if we have accepted Christ as our sin-bearer, we no longer are under the threat of extinction. So the survival mentality needs to be replaced by an abundance mentality. Some well-meaning Christians attempt to gloss over sin because they feel it is spiritually healthier to just think positive. Unfortunately, that’s probably why there is a problem with Christians and pornography.

But honest self-examination is not in order to take on a morbid, sin-absorbed attitude. Just the opposite, in fact. The purpose for identifying sin in our lives is to keep ourselves right before God in order to enjoy the abundant life He desires to give us. The good news of the gospel is that God is not only able, He is also willing to clean us up. The stipulation, however, is we must come to Him on His terms, not our own. Take your mess to Him, tell Him you are sorry, and ask Him to wash you clean again.
