to eXXit, the web site designed to help you stand strong in the face of sexual
temptation.
Passage: Deuteronomy 10:12-14*
12. And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to
fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God
with all your heart and with all your soul,
13. and to observe the LORD's commands and decrees that I am giving
you today for your own good?
14. To the LORD your God belong the heavens, even the highest
heavens, the earth and everything in it.
Question
1. Why does this passage urge us to obey God?
2. Do you apply this strategy to avoid Web porn?
Practical help
For those who believe home-life guru Martha Stewart has no ties with
Scripture, read on for a surprise.
After Stewart completes some fabulously expensive and time-consuming
project on her TV show, she often tells viewers, "It's a good thing." No
argument here. Who wouldn't want a gold-spangled Easter centerpiece with silver bunting?
But notice how this Bible passage echoes Stewart's basic message: Do it because it's good,
not just because it's right.
Sure it's wrong to drool over Web porn. But that's not the only
reason to steer clear of cybersexuality. Avoid it "for your own good." When
you're tempted, remember where Web porn leads: disappointment, frustration, twisted sexual
ideas, relational strain and, in some cases, prostitution. (that's where many people go
after porn loses its punch.)
Don't just heed filmmaker Spike Lee and "do the right
thing." Do the good thing.
