Passage: Mark 15:22, 25 and 33*

22. And they took [Jesus] to the place named Golgotha, which is, Dead Man's Head.

25. And it was the third hour when they put him on the cross.

33. And when the sixth hour had come, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour.

Question

Why do you think darkness covered the land as Jesus hung on the cross?

Practical help

On the cross Jesus was covered in darkness. Evil often waits for darkness to cloak its activities. Have you ever turned off lights in order to have “more privacy”?

On the one hand, this could be the picture of a helpless man hanging on a cross, overwhelmed by darkness. Of course you would only conclude that if you didn’t know the rest of the story. Jesus is the one that will burst out of the grave three days later. Darkness is no barrier to God. In fact, as with light, it was God who created the darkness. As recorded in Isaiah 45:5-8:

5. "I am the LORD, and there is no other; Besides Me there is no God. I will gird you, though you have not known Me;

6. That men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun That there is no one besides Me. I am the LORD, and there is no other,

7. The One forming light and creating darkness, Causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the LORD who does all these.

8. "Drip down, O heavens, from above, And let the clouds pour down righteousness; Let the earth open up and salvation bear fruit, And righteousness spring up with it. I, the LORD, have created it.

Nothing happened to Jesus, even on the cross, that was not overseen by His Heavenly Father. And what is true for Jesus is also true for you. So don’t think you can hide from God in the darkness that He formed. He knows what you are doing, even when you won’t come clean. In addition, if you have placed your trust in God, then this promise found in Colossians 1:13-14 is for you:

13. For He delivered us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,

14. in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Jesus has taken on your sin and darkness in order to give you a new life. Porn can’t hold you back.
