Practical help

Recent reports from Iraq tell us that the U.S. government paid Saddam Hussein's elite Republican Guard millions of dollars not to fight. This unusual military strategy may have accounted for some of the coalition's success in the battle for Baghdad.

Such an unusual strategy can also help us resist Web porn. Rather than fighting temptation head-on — the equivalent of a frontal assault — today's passage suggests another approach: thankfulness. "Consider what great things he has done for you." Well, we can do that. Our lives, families, friendships, work and play all come from the giver of all good things.

But it's no accident that the command for thankfulness follows another command: "Be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart." When we're thankful for the things that God has given us, we're more likely to live a faithful porn-free life. Call it the Mother of All Weapons.

Thankfulness is an unusual strategy in the war on porn. But sometimes unusual works. Just ask Saddam Hussein.
