Passage: Luke 24:45-49*

45. Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,

46. and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and rise again from the dead the third day;

47. and that repentance for forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

48. You are witnesses of these things.

49. And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

Questions

NOTE: The verses above from Luke’s Gospel describe an event on the evening of the first Easter Sunday.

1. To what authority does Jesus point the disciples to validate what happened to Him (resurrection)? (v. 45)

2. Why do you think Jesus stated the obvious and reminded His disciples that they had seen the events foretold in Scripture? What effect did REMINDING them have? (v. 48)

3. What “commission” does Jesus issue to the disciples? (v. 47)

Practical help

For the disciples of Jesus Christ, everything changed on Easter Sunday. So in the first century, and so today. Because Jesus rose again, there is hope that messed up lives will be restored. Because of the resurrection, failures are not final. A living Savior can right all wrongs, change lives and grant hope for the future. Friend, sin was conquered on the cross of Christ on “Good Friday.” Have you been living in the defeated land of Sad Saturday? Perhaps it is time to lift up your eyes and see a risen Savior who rose victorious from the grave to grant YOU victory over your besetting sins, too. That would include His purpose to free you from an addictive compulsion to lustfully turn to porn on the Web! He died on the cross to forgive your sins. He rose from the dead to bring you new life - a life of victory. Rejoice this day that you serve a RISEN Savior - and walk in His victory!
