Welcome to eXXit, the web site designed to help
you stand strong in the face of sexual temptation.
Passage: Numbers 30:2*
"When a man makes a vow to the Lord or
takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his
word but must do everything he said."
Questions
1. How did vows and oaths function in the
Old Testament?
2. How can you use them to help you resist the
temptation of Web porn?
Practical help
We live in a voluntary world. No one can
force us to do anything we don't want to do — provided no one gets
hurt. Sometimes this situation helps believers, such as when we share
our faith freely. (Don't try this in Iran.) But sometimes this
situation hurts believers, such as when we have to endure waves of
porn junk e-mail.
The book of Numbers offers us a way to deal with
such excessive freedom: a vow. When we vow not to view Web porn, we
invoke a reality larger than ourselves; we draw God into our deepest
obligations. His calling to faithfulness can make the difference
between failure and success.
So can a witness. Ask a Christian friend to help
you keep your vow. In our voluntary world, this arrangement may be one
of the best ways to handle temptation.
