Passage: Matthew 28:16-20*

16. But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated.

17. And when they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful.

18. And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

19. "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

20. teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

Questions

NOTE: The event described above occurred a few days after Easter Sunday, in Galilee, some 60-80 miles to the north of Jerusalem.

1. Does it surprise you to read that some were “doubtful”? What do you suppose they were doubting (v. 16). Themselves? Jesus? When you doubt, where are your doubts focused?

2. What word do you find in v. 18 that speaks to the disciples’ doubt?

3. What specific command(s) does Jesus give His disciples in verses 19-20?

Practical help

Doubts assail believers. Always have. Where do doubts come from and how should the Christian deal with his doubts? My best guess is that the disciples’ doubts centered on their own understanding of their frailty to ever have victory, given their failure on the night of Jesus’ arrest AND on Jesus Himself.

Jesus speaks to their doubts about Himself when He claims to have all authority. And He speaks to their doubts about themselves when He tells this group of hang-dog, defeated men to go out there and be “world-beaters.” This was no empty challenge. He was going to give them the resources to change the world by making disciples through the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Hey, you! eXXit reader!! Been defeated? Living in despondency? Jesus doesn’t want you there. He wants you to grab hold of the resources He - the All-Powerful Lord! - has given you and make a difference for eternity. GO - get out there and mix it up with the world for Christ’s sake. MAKE DISCIPLES - pour your life into the lives of those who don’t know Him yet, or who don’t know Him as well as you do. TEACH THEM TO OBSERVE JESUS’ COMMANDS - as you observe and keep those commands, so make obedience a prime part of your investment in others.

Don’t sit on the sidelines. You have been redeemed for something bigger than yourself - the Great Commission!
