Passage: Romans 6:1-11*
1. What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace
might increase?
2. May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?
3. Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into
Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?
4. Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into
death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father,
so we too might walk in newness of life.
5. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His
death, certainly we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection,
6. knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, that our
body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin;
7. for he who has died is freed from sin.
8. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also
live with Him,
9. knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never
to die again; death no longer is master over Him.
10. For the death that He died, He died to sin, once for all; but
the life that He lives, He lives to God.
11. Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God
in Christ Jesus.
Questions
1. When the Roman soldiers took Jesus down from the cross, was He
dead, or alive?
2. On that first Easter Sunday morning, was Jesus dead or alive?
3. Before you put your trust in Christ for forgiveness, were you
spiritually dead or alive?
4. Now that you have placed your trust in Christ for forgiveness,
are you spiritually dead or alive? (v. 11)
Practical help
Something changed the instant you placed your trust in Jesus for
salvation. (click here for the Gospel <>)You became
ALIVE in a way you never had been before. You had walked around for years, physically
alive. But, your spirit - that part of you that relates to God, was dead because of sin.
Just as dead as Jesus was when they took Him off the cross and laid Him in the tomb.
When you trusted Jesus, though, you became spiritually alive to God
and that part of you that had been so alive to sin, ACTUALLY died. You became a
Heaven-bound, forgiven, child of God.
Is it still possible to sin, as a Heaven-bound, forgiven,
child of God? Yes! But it would be like a King choosing to live on the street,
begging for meals and eating other peoples garbage.
Paul says that Christians are to live as the spiritually alive
people they are. Put away the porn, brothers. You were made alive to God SO THAT you could
find freedom from that stuff and enjoy a life of holiness before God. After all, what
happened to Jesus, really happened to you, too. To paraphrase the song we all know so
well, You once were dead, but now you live!
