temptation.
Passage: Philippians 1:6*
... being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you
will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Question
1. Do you feel like the positive message of this passage extends to
your struggles with Web porn?
2. Why or why not?
Practical help
J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the famed Lord of the Rings fantasy
series, had an interesting view of fiction and theology. The devout Christian believed his
magic-filled fiction followed the basic pattern of the real world more than realistic
novels. In Scripture he saw "eucatastrophe" -- the opposite of catastrophe, i.e.
the final triumph of good over evil -- a plot line he built into his work.
In Philippians 1:6, Paul hopes for the same positive vision for us.
Scratch that. It's not hope, it's confidence. Why should we not share Paul's confidence in
our struggles with Web porn? The day of Christ Jesus will bring an end to all our
weaknesses, but we should look forward to more good works as that day draws nearer.
If your view of temptation doesn't align with Paul's, you've got
another thing coming -- eucatastrophe. And that's no fantasy.
