Welcome to eXXit, the web site designed to help you stand strong in the face of sexual temptation.

The following is one of 42 studies on the "armor of God" as it relates to resisting Web porn. Some of the studies will examine Ephesians chapter six, which is famous for the armor theme. Some of the other studies, however, will examine how the armor pieces are discussed elsewhere in Scripture. All 42 studies are listed in the three-minute study index for the dates April 1 through May 12, 1999. Feel free to study and/or download the entire set. We welcome your feedback to this thematic approach in the three-minute studies.

Passages:

Ezekiel 23:24*

And they will come against you with weapons, chariots, and wagons, and with a company of peoples. They will set themselves against you on every side with buckler and shield and helmet; and I shall commit the judgment to them, and they will judge you according to their customs.

1 Thessalonians 5:8*

But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation.

Questions

A little background is necessary to understand the verse from Ezekiel. The prophet was warning the Jews that God was going to send the Babylonians (an enemy people) against them as a judgment. He describes these Babylonians as being fit for battle and virtually invincible.

1. Notice all of the defensive armor and helps the Babylonians have in this war against Israel. List all that they have in their arsenal.

2. Of what particular help would the helmet be in a battle?

3. Why does the apostle Paul assure us that Christians have put on as a helmet? What help do you think this helmet gives to a Christian when embattled by temptation?

Practical help

The Babylonian soldiers would not be defeated by a blow to the head from a Jewish mallet. Their helmets protected them. In this way, they would be able to march to victory over the Jews.

Likewise, Christians have been given a helmet that is just as effective in winning victory over temptation as the Babylonians’ helmet was effective in winning against the Jews. Our helmet is the hope of our salvation.

A Christian’s salvation cannot be taken off and put on at will. God has saved, and no one can un-save the one God has saved! However, the helmet that protects the mind can be removed. It is possible to forget the salvation that is ours, the wonderful things God has done in forgiving our sin, the grace we have experienced through trusting Christ, and the hope of one day living with God in Heaven.

When tempted to view web pornography, make sure your helmet is firmly in place. Remembering your salvation will protect you from the mallet blows of temptation and enable you to stand strong!
