Welcome to eXXit, the web site designed to help you stand strong in the face of sexual temptation.

Passage: 1 Samuel 23:1*

And Jonathan, Saul's son, arose and went to David at Horesh, and encouraged him in God.

Questions

1. What character qualities in Jonathan made him a trusted friend?

2. What was his purpose in going to David?

Practical help

Jonathan was the kind of friend that each of us needs. His priority was to encourage David in the Lord, even at great personal risk. You may already have this kind of friend in your life.

We cannot hope to handle sexual temptation effectively when alone. In fact, God didn’t design us to survive alone in this spiritual battle. Hebrews 3:12-13 indicates that we need close personal interaction with others in order not to be “hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”

It is frightening to “confess your sins to each other and pray for each other” (James 5:16). Yet, every one of us needs to do just that regularly. Nothing will cause an illicit attraction or fantasy or temptation to view Web porn to shatter in pieces quicker than alerting a praying friend.

In your personal strategy for ongoing sexual purity, having a close friend who is willing to take risks in holding you accountable can be a great help. Take action today by approaching a friend to talk about your struggle with pornography. If necessary, ask God to bring the right kind of friend into your life for the purpose of having someone who will encourage you in Him.
