Passage: 1 John 2:1-2*
1. My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin.
But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense -- Jesus
Christ, the Righteous One.
2. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours
but also for the sins of the whole world.
Question
1. Do you get defensive when somebody catches you in a sin?
2. Who normally speaks in a trial -- the defendant or his attorney?
3. Why is Jesus' defense so effective?
Practical help
Certainly God's plan is not for us to sin. John's writing was to
give us something to look toward to take our eyes off of our selfish pursuits and vain
struggles for attention and affection and fulfillment. But, he knew that, given the human
condition, there wasn't much chance of anybody pulling through life without slipping up
somewhere. What an encouragement to know that there's already a defense planned for us --
we don't need to go and find legal help, or take out a bail bond; Jesus' blood pays the
debt that we owe for us, and it is supplied free of charge.
If you struggle with internet pornography, it is probably much
harder to accept the free grace of Jesus than it is if your sins are less besetting and
addictive. Can God really forgive the nastiness and vulgarity of the deeper crevices of
your heart that secretly indulge in fantasy passions? Well, how about verse 2? His blood
is enough not only for your sins, but the sins of the whole world! That should put things
in perspective.
