Passage: Genesis 1:3-5; 15-18*

3. Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.

4. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.

5. And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

...

15. and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth"; and it was so.

16. And God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also.

17. And God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth,

18. and to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good.

Question

According to Genesis 1:5, when does the "day" begin?

Practical help

For the next several days, we will be exploring the themes of "light" and "darkness" through the Bible. We’ll note that many times, the Bible uses the terms in simple literal terms, and that, at other times, "light" and "dark" are symbolic of righteousness and sin.

At the very beginning of creation, God demonstrated His preference for light over dark. How do we know that? Well, God never says that the darkness was good, but in verse 4, He says that the light was good. Also, in verse 18, the thought is not that the darkness is good, but that the separation of light from darkness is good. Then, look carefully and see when the "day" begins. It begins in the evening, as the darkness falls. But, then, every day, light wins! Darkness flees at the presence of light. God sees to it that light wins every morning.

Throwing our lot in with the darkness of sin (in the form of a lustful gaze at porn or any other sin) is ultimately choosing to be on the losing side. Righteousness wins. God will see to that as surely as He sees to it that the light wins every morning in the world He has created.

Recognize this, first of all: your voyages into the darkness of porn are doomed to failure in the end. Choose the light of righteousness, and welcome a new day of victory.
