Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus
is the Son of God.
Question
1. What does John mean by "overcome"?
2. If you are struggling to overcome pornography, should you try

3. Does victory over sin come from inside us or from elsewhere?
Practical help
This simple little scripture informs us without much room for
argument that there is only one way to get past "the world," which for John
represents anything which is not of God (such as pornography). We will not be commended
for how hard we tried to defeat sin in our own hearts, only for trusting fully in Jesus.
Jesus told us in John 16:33 that "In this world you will have trouble. But take
heart! I have overcome the world." Today's passage then is not meant as a
discouragement to tell us that if we still struggle with sin, we must not truly believe in
Jesus. Rather, it is to tell us that the victory is already won, and it is Jesus who won
it. So, "standing strong" really means taking hold of the strength of Jesus. And
yes, you can be an overcomer. But not as long as your fighting is in your own strength.
