temptation.
Passage: Titus 3:14*
And let our people also learn to engage in good deeds to meet pressing needs, that they may not be unfruitful.
Questions
1. Paul wants Christians ("our people") to engage in "good deeds." What are some examples of good deeds you can think of right offhand?
2. For what reason are Christians to engage in these good deeds?
Practical help
"Good deeds" as Paul speaks of them in the verse above, are relational deeds. They are deeds performed to meet others' "pressing needs." Now, obviously, the list of potential good deeds is endless — and I won't even try to make a list.
What we who struggle to maintain sexual purity need to note from this verse, though, is the result of engaging in these good deeds. According to Paul, an others-focused orientation results in fruitfulness. In other words, one of the tools that the Holy Spirit uses to mold and shape character in Christians is loving deeds performed for our friends.
Ceasing a porn habit is a tough assignment. Rather than trying to simply use willpower, try orienting to good deeds you can engage in to meet the pressing needs of the people you know. The Bible says that such a lifestyle will result in fruitfulness — the kind of fruitfulness that leads to sexual purity.
