stand strong in the face of sexual temptation.
Passage:
Colossians 2:6-7*
6. As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the
Lord, so walk in Him,
7. having been firmly rooted and now being built
up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed,
and overflowing with gratitude.
Questions
1. The apostle Paul makes an assumption in verse 6
that we, the readers, have “received Christ Jesus the Lord.” Do you
know what it means to “receive Christ”? If not, click here for an
explanation of what is involved in receiving Christ, or becoming a
Christian.
2. There is to be a parallel between the way we
“receive Christ” and the way we “walk in Christ.” What are some of the
characteristics of a person’s reception of Christ? How could these
characteristics be transferred to that person’s “walk” with
Christ?
Practical help
Any one who has received Christ has done so “by
grace through faith.” (see Ephesians 2:8-9). While Paul may have had
many things on his mind when he wrote Colossians 2:6-7, he certainly
was saying that the Christian is to walk by faith and the Christian is
to depend on grace. What that means in practical terms for the person
who is struggling with Internet porn is this: Your standing before God
is not on the basis of your works. What you do with your life, the
acts that you perform, are important, but your works do not justify
you before God. Faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross
does. AND, having been justified by faith, you are the recipient of
God’s grace on a daily basis. There is no sin you can commit that
would separate you from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus your
Lord (see Romans 8). When tempted, hold on to your faith and stand
strong. When you fall (and God willing, you won’t!), be grateful to
God for His amazing grace and rise again to walk by
faith!
