Psalm 76:4*
Thou art resplendent with light, more majestic than mountains rich with game.
1 Timothy 6:16*
God alone is immortal and lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.
2 Samuel 22:29*
For Thou art my lamp, O Lord; and the Lord illumines my darkness!
Psalm 27:1*
The Lord is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life — of whom shall I be afraid?
1 John 1:5*
This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you; that God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.
Question
What significance do you attach to the repeated statements (above) that God is light or that God dwells in light? In other words, what do you learn about God from these statements? What message do these verses send to you, His child?
Practical help
Light is the realm of the unambiguous. It is clear. Light is powerful and relentless. It shines, and darkness flees. Light is pure, unalloyed by darkness.
God, too, communicates His will unambiguously, and is powerful. Light is a perfect analogy for the nature of God. His goodness is as diffuse and all-encompassing as a soft 60 watt bulb, and His sovereign power as penetrating as a laser.
And light serves as a picture perfect analogy of God’s moral nature. He is pure, through and through. There is no evil in God, just as there is no darkness hidden in a ray of light.
Christians are called to be "perfect" (like God, 1 Peter 1) and are told that our destiny is to be conformed to the image of Jesus (Romans 8) (If you want to know how to become a Christian, please click here). Our morally perfect God calls us to follow Him into purity. Among other things, that means that we are to follow as He leads us away from the lustfulness and darkness of Internet porn.
Resisting the temptation to view porn involves more than just saying, "NO!" It involves seeing God as He truly is. Everyone who has the hope of eternity in his/her heart "purifies himself, just as He Himself is pure." (1 John 3:3).
