Passage: Hebrews 10:24-25*

24. and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds,

25. not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more, as you see the day drawing near.

Question

According to verse 24, above, you and I should seek to "stimulate" each other. The word "stimulate" sometimes brings a certain image to mind. What does the verse say the goal of our stimulation should be, as Christians?

 

Practical help

Did you see the piece of encouragement recently played out prior to the Dallas Mavericks/Portland Trailblazers NBA playoff game? A 13 year old singer from Oswego, Oregon, Natalie Gilbert, stood to sing the national anthem in front of a packed arena. Somewhere in the middle of the song, she blanked — forgot the words. After a few panicked seconds, Trailblazers' coach, Mo Cheeks, strode over to Natalie, put his arm around her shoulders, and "encouraged" her through the remainder of the song.

Mo helped her accomplish what she wanted to do, but wouldn't have been able to do on her own. What a gift! No doubt Natalie will remember Mo's encouragement for as long as she lives.

The gift of encouragement is one of the great gifts Christians can give to each other. I define encouragement as the art of helping another person accomplish what he/she wants to do for God.

If you are a believer struggling with a porn addiction, you no doubt want to be rid of the stuff. You need a Mo Cheeks! Unfortunately, Mo is busy, and probably unavailable to you and me. Where do you find your Mo?

Take a step of faith and seek out the encouragement available at your local Christ-honoring, Bible-believing church. No church is perfect, but most churches have men and women who are more than willing to come alongside struggling people to help them accomplish what they want to do for God. Trust God that He will bring just the encourager you need. Before long, you will be somebody else' Mo!
