Passage: Matthew 5:14-16*

14. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

15. Nor do men light a lamp, and put it under the peck-measure, but on the lampstand; and it gives light to all who are in the house.

16. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Questions

1. According to these verses, who do you think Jesus is identifying as "the light of the world"?

2. What might "the lights of the world" do, if not shine? (v. 15)

Practical help

Jesus is speaking to His disciples, and in the hearing of a vast multitude, in these verses from the Sermon on the Mount. In this same context, He calls those who follow Him both "the salt of the earth" and "the light of the world."

In many places in the Bible, the world in which we live is characterized as being a "dark" place. It is dark, morally. It is dark, spiritually. How will a dark world be illumined? God shines His light to people walking in darkness through His people. If you have placed your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, YOU are to be a living, breathing flashlight for God!

Oh, you could choose to turn off the switch and NOT shine. Christians you have known (and maybe you) have been guilty of turning off the flashlight of God's love and grace and life-transforming power. But Christians need to realize that if they don't shine, the people who live in this dark world will never see their way to God.

Believer in Jesus — SHINE! Let other people see the changes God has made and is making in your life. And if there is anything shameful (like viewing porn) that is keeping you from confidently shining for Jesus, let the Lord shine His purifying light on you.
