Welcome to eXXit, the web site designed to help you stand strong in the face of sexual temptation.

The following is one of 42 studies on the "armor of God" as it relates to resisting Web porn. Some of the studies will examine Ephesians chapter six, which is famous for the armor theme. Some of the other studies, however, will examine how the armor pieces are discussed elsewhere in Scripture. All 42 studies are listed in the three-minute study index for the dates April 1 through May 12, 1999. Feel free to study and/or download the entire set. We welcome your feedback to this thematic approach in the three-minute studies.

Passage: 1 John 5:14-15*

14. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

15. And if we know that he hears us — whatever we ask — we know that we have what we asked of him.

Questions

1. How are you to approach God when asking him for something (verse 14)?

2. What do you think it means to ask something "according to his will"?

3. What great comfort can you receive from verse 15?

Practical help

Imagine the creator of the universe turning his ear toward you and saying, "What can I do for you?" That prospect sounds incredible, but that's exactly what God wants to do.

"Sure," you say, "I know that, and I talk to him all the time, but I don't thinks he's listening to me. He doesn't seem to be answering."

Well, this passage says you can approach God and ask of him in total confidence that he will listen to you. The key here is that he answers requests from you that are according to his will (he won't answer any that aren't). And if those requests are according to his will, you can know that you'll have them. Wow!

But, how do you know you're asking something according to God's will? Well, first of all you have to trust who he is and what he's done for you. (If you haven't trusted in God, click here.) Then you must seek to know more and more about what God is like and what he wants for you. You do that by studying about him and his will for you in the Bible, by talking to him through prayer, and by interacting with other believers.

If a Web pornography addiction has you so disconnected from knowing God's will that you think he doesn't listen to you, then it's time for a turn. Turn off the computer. Turn around and get your Bible. Turn to the Gospel of John and start reading. You'll soon be asking God for things that are in his will for you. He will listen. He will answer.
