Passage: Exodus 4:11*

The LORD said to [Moses], "Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the LORD?"

Questions

1. What is the point of this verse?

2. What can we learn from it?

Practical help

A recent news item reported that teenage brains are a power station of misfiring energy and bubbling hormones, explaining adolescent's unsavory behavior. No argument here. Yet the article went on to imply that these biological sources excused teen mayhem. In other words, "don't blame adolescents; their brains made them do it."

Some apply this same idea to their sexual impulses. They can't resist Web porn because they're "not wired that way." God takes a dim view of such determinism. He gives us the ability to control our bodies, even when the genetic deck is stacked against us.

Moses is exhibit A. God chose a man with a speech impediment to be his main spokesman to the mighty Egyptian empire — and in the passage above, he didn't take no for an answer. Men who struggle with Web porn might add on a fitting verse, "Who gave man his penis?" Women might tack on a verse of their own.

For both sexes, the point remains the same: Take responsibility for your biology. God grants us the dignity of free will.
