Passages: Ephesians 6:17a*
And take the helmet of salvation…
Questions
1. In the letter to the church at Ephesus, written by the Apostle Paul, he describes putting on "the full armor of God" (verse 6:13). Review this section to remind yourself of the many items we are to clothe ourselves with and what they mean.
2. Are you wearing spiritual armor? How might praying to God that He clothe you with His armor help you resist pornography today? As you pray, state each item and how you specifically need it in your life. This might be a good prayer to write down and repeat often.
3. When, where, how and by whom were you lead to give your life to Jesus Christ? Do you remember how you felt at the time? If these questions are not easy to answer, click here.
Practical help
There it sits on the table. You are dressing to get ready for battle. The belt holding up your pants is on tight. Your flaming spear-proof vest is in place over the vital organs of your chest cavity, including your heart. Boots are laced, and you have your shield as well.
Time to pick up the helmet. You know, that thing that protects your brain. What’s it’s name? The Helmet of Salvation? Could the writer be making the point that when you start taking blows to the head about your faith in God, about your stand for living a pure life and about the ugliness of pornography, you need to stop and recall your salvation?
Thinking about your salvation protects your brain and helps you to resist temptations and to think clearly in this chaotic world. Good thinking that moves you out of addictive behaviors begins with knowing God and trusting Him with your life now and into forever. If you are consumed by thinking about yourself and your problems, and have no place for the Lord, then expect to go in circles for the rest of your short life. But don’t use the excuse that knowing God was too difficult.
In fact knowing God is so simple, even children can do it. See this as a tremendous proof that God is more clever and loving than we are. We would have probably made a merit-based system for acceptance into heaven, after all, that’s how the world operates. He has made a way of escape that anyone, even the simple-minded, who choose to believe can receive salvation (John 3:16). It’s as if Jesus has reduced the complexity of salvation down to the same level of difficulty as putting on a hat.
