Passage: Luke 14:25-26*

25. Now large crowds were going along with Him; and He turned and said to them,

26. "If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple."

Questions

1. How important are close family relationships to you?

2. How important is your relationship with Jesus?

Practical help

So, with Jesus it's either family or Him. Sounds pretty radical. But why?

I don't know about you, but I'm not into hating my mother or father or spouse or sibling or child. Sure, sometimes I don't like them very much, but I could never hate them.

Today's passage is one of the more ironic in scripture. One of the main stays about the Bible is that it's a book of absolutes. There's the one and only God (see Exodus 20:3) and the one and only way (see John 14:6) just to name a couple. So then we see verse 26 above and discover a lesson on relativity.

Does Jesus really want you to hate your mother? Absolutely not! Does Jesus really want your level of dependence, commitment, devotion and love for Him to make even your closest relationships here on earth seem like hate by comparison. Absolutely!

If Jesus becomes this important in your life, trusting Him to retrieve you from the clutches of a porn habit will be easy. Relatively speaking, where's He at in your life?
