Title: A Warning for the Strong ----------------------- Date: 05/21/1999
Keywords: "beneficial" "permissible"
Welcome to eXXit, the web site designed to help you stand strong in the face of sexual temptation.

Passage: 1 Corinthians 10:23*

"Everything is permissible" — but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible" — but not everything is constructive.

Questions

1. Is pornography “permissible” for you?

2. Is it “beneficial” to you?

Practical help

The Christian argument for Web porn runs something like this: “It just doesn’t affect me. I don’t turn off my monitor and commit adultery or rape somebody. I’m strong enough to resist those temptations. I don’t see what the problem is.”

Setting aside the questionable premise that pornography doesn’t affect us, Paul reframes debates such as these in his letter to the Corinthians. Sometimes, the apostle argues, the issue is more about an absent upside than a actual downside.

Pro-porn believers stand on shaky ground here. What possible benefit do we gain from pornography? We’re hard pressed to come up with one solid answer.

The moral to Paul’s message: We’re free, but we should use our freedom for constructive ends. Pornography just doesn’t qualify.
