Passage:
Proverbs 26:27*
If a man digs a pit, he will fall into it; if a man rolls a stone, it will roll back on him.
Questions:
1. How is your porn habit like digging a pit or rolling a stone?
2. What does this verse say will happen next?
Practical help
Some words tell a lot about us by their very existence. Take "theodicy." The word means justifying the ways of God to humanity.
Though such a word helps with some of the most difficult questions we face — such as why the innocent suffer — it won't bail us out of a porn habit. Our struggles in that area trace back to us, not to God. As the moral philosophers would say, we're the moral agents responsible for our smut intake. Or as Proverbs 26:27 notes, we dug the pit, and we rolled the stone.
And we'll suffer the consequences. That might mean a debased view of sexuality; or strained relationships with family, friends and God. Rest assured that we will pay for our foolish choices.
But the next time we're tempted to blame God for our shortcomings, let's pick up a rock or dig a hole. We're responsible for that. And we're responsible for this too.
