Passage: Judges 2:1-4*

1. The angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, "I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land that I swore to give to your forefathers. I said, 'I will never break my covenant with you,

2. and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall break down their altars.' Yet you have disobeyed me. Why have you done this?

3. Now therefore I tell you that I will not drive them out before you; they will be in your sides and their gods will be a snare to you."

4. When the angel of the LORD had spoken these things to all the Israelites, the people wept aloud,

Questions

1. If your bible has a concordance, see what else you can find about the angel of the Lord. Who do some think he is?

2. From verse 1, how does the Lord demonstrate his trustworthiness?

3. Do you think God makes good and his promises?

Practical help

Does a broken promise ever send you reeling? Have you had your share (or more than your share) of let downs? How do you react?

Maybe in your life there's been a promise of intimate relationship that's failed and you now attempt to fulfill that need with pornography. Are you really fulfilled?

God created you to be dependent on him. (You may not know it, yet) But he also created you with the freedom to make choices. You can decide whether you'll depend on him or on something else to meet your needs. So, how do you choose?

Well, one way is to see if God delivers -- is he trustworthy.

In verse one of today's passage the angel of the Lord (who some Bible scholars believe is Jesus) gives us the answer: "I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land that I swore to give to your forefathers. I said, 'I will never break my covenant with you..."

In other words: I said I'd deliver you from the bondage of Egypt, and I did. I said I'd never break my covenant with you, and I won't. That's good enough for me, how about you?
