In what way could God's love be better than life?
Practical help
Psychologist Abraham Maslow made a name for himself -- and secured real estate in every Psych. 101 textbook -- with his theory of the hierarchy of needs. The theory holds that humans need to meet lower-level needs, such as food and shelter, before moving up to higher-level needs, like "self-actualization." You might be a Wall Street financier operating at full potential, but if you lose your job, you're bounced to the bottom rung.
David the psalmist doesn't buy that viewpoint. To him, God's love is better than life itself, a need so basic that Maslow left it out. Security, safety, love, even the thrill of Web porn -- the love of God trumps them all.
Recognize that fact by glorifying God every time you think of him. Or set aside time for praise. David did. And he's more famous than Maslow.
