temptation.
Passage: Psalm 63:9*
They who seek my life will be destroyed; they will go down to the depths of the earth.
Question
How could this angry verse apply to us?
Practical help
In her book "The Cloister Walk," Kathleen Norris objects to the way Christians often downplay the "angry" psalms. These spiritual songs depict the full range of human feeling and deserve their place in the cannon and in our lives.
On a Web site dedicated to helping you "stand strong in the face of sexual temptation," the obvious question arises: Does Psalm 63:9 mean that one day God will smoke all of those pornographers in the San Fernando Valley? Answer: Who knows? Only God can tell. But I'd be a little nervous if I was in the porno biz.
After all, pornography destroys lives, which fits the first part of the verse. The second part seems clear enough. Hardy souls can look up verse 10. (Spoiler: It involves jackals.) None of this bodes well for pornographers, but it does square nicely with God's promise to mete out justice come judgment day.
So, if you want to imitate the New Testament saints, bless the pornographers out for your blood. But if you feel David's anger, rest assured that they'll have hell to pay.
