Welcome to eXXit, the web site designed to help you stand strong in the face of sexual temptation.

The beginning of the Gospel of John is "shallow enough for the beginner to wade in and deep enough for the experienced to never touch bottom." Let's explore John's Prologue (John 1:1-18) for a few days and see what we might discover about God and Jesus, grace and forgiveness, and the life-changing power of God.

Passage: John 1:1-5*

1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2. He was in the beginning with God.

3. All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

4. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

5. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

Questions

1. Who do you think John is referring to when he writes about "the Word"?

2. What do you learn about "the Word" from these five verses?

Practical help

When someone you know (Heaven forbid it would be you or me!) doesn't understand something that others believe is self-evident, we frequently hear those others say, with disdain, "That person just doesn't get it!"

The club of those who don't get it is a big club. Two thousand years ago, lots of people didn't get it. "The Word" entered the world He had created long ages before and was roundly rejected by the people who met Him.

Who is this "Word"? And what can we learn about Him from the verses above?

Well, the Word is the communication of God. In the Old Testament, when Jews heard "The Word of the Lord came to [such and such a prophet]" they knew that some communiqué from God would shortly follow.

The "Word" John refers to is also the communication of God. The Word is God. The Word is eternal. The Word is the Creator. The Word is the source of life. The Word is the light that shines God's life into the lives of men and women. The Word is not impersonal, but intensely personal.

Yet sadly, John tells us that people did not "get it" when the Word shined into the darkness. They rejected Him.

It is vitally important that you and I "get it." The Person who is "the Word" is so crucial to living as God intended us to live that if we don't "get it" we're sunk.
