Passage: Luke 13:18-19*
18. Then Jesus asked, "What is the kingdom of God like? What
shall I compare it to?
19. It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his
garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air perched in its branches."
Question
How can this verse apply to your battles with pornography?
Practical help
In 1974, E.F. Schumacher wrote a book about "people-first"
economics called "Small Is Beautiful." One of his ideas -- innovative at the
time, less controversial some 25 years later -- was that we often use big solutions to
solve big problems. We build the Hoover Dam when a chain of small hydroelectrics would do
the job -- and threaten the environment.
Christians also tend to apply a bigger-is-better approach to our
struggles with Web porn. We try everything to succeed in ever-escalating gambits for
success. But Jesus offers a better way. Like a growing tree, the kingdom advances in small
increments. Think of saying no today, not vowing to never view porn again. Or call an
accountability partner once a week, not swearing to phone every day for six weeks.
Big changes -- kingdom changes -- start small. And small is
beautiful.
