Passage: Genesis 2:25 through 3:1-7*

2:25. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

3:1. Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, "Indeed, has God said, 'You shall not eat from any tree of the garden'?"

3: 2. And the woman said to the serpent, "From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat;

3: 3. but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat from it or touch it, lest you die.'"

3: 3: 4. And the serpent said to the woman, "You surely shall not die!

5. "For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

3: 6. When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.

3: 7. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.

Questions

1. What was the result of Adam’s and Eve’s eating of the forbidden fruit (verse 3:7)?

2. How would you contrast the relationship between Adam and Eve as seen in chapter 3, verse 7, and chapter 2, verse 25?

Practical help

Hoping to find freedom and delight through disobeying God, Adam and Eve instead found:
The judgment of God (they died spiritually in the eating of the fruit and began to die physically)

Alienation from each other (note Genesis 3:16-19)

Banishment from the garden of Eden (see the rest of chapter 3)

Shame

The end result of sin is so predictable. Our sin mocks God’s holiness and invites His judgment and discipline. Our sin separates intimate friends. And our sin brings a sense of shame.

That suits the enemy of your soul just fine! Satan hates you and has a terrible plan for your life. So, don’t give him an ear when he whispers about the beauty of pornography. He’s lying.

Listen instead to the One who loves you best. He calls you to stay away from porn because it is bad for you! Next time you are tempted, recall the image of Adam and Eve being escorted out of the garden of Eden. The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Always has been and always will be. And never forget, either, that the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord!
