Passage: Matthew 4:18-20*

18. As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.

19. "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."

20. At once they left their nets and followed him.

Questions

1. What criteria did Jesus use to select the disciples?

2. What can his method teach us about qualifications for accountability partners?

Practical help

Headlines tell us U.S. presidential hopefuls are already gearing up their 2004 campaigns. Senators, representatives, and governors who aspire to the Oval Office regularly weigh in on issues to keep their names in the news.

Jesus used none of this long-range planning when he chose the disciples. Though it's likely he knew all of them, he engaged no search committees and applied no vetting process. He just walked by the Sea of Galilee and said, "Hey, Peter and Andrew! Come with me."

We can learn from Jesus' example. When we need someone — or someones — to help us overcome the temptation of pornography, we don't have to find the best. Only the available.
