Passage: Proverbs 16:32*

Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city.

Question

What does this verse mean?

Practical help

How's your prayer life? Staying away from those cookies? Not speeding when you drive?

Though none of these areas seem to relate to pornography, all of them do. That's because all of them — including porn — involve self control, or the lack of it. As Proverbs says, a man who controls his temper is better than one who can take a city.

Oftentimes, Christians split behavior into distinct units, such as prayer, diet, and motoring. While that strategy can help you attack a specific problem area, it can obscure the underlying discipline needed to deal with the lot: self-control.

Instead of creating a special plan to avoid pornography, think about how a self-controlled life would look. Success in one area (say, pornography) will likely lead to success in others (even speeding).
