Passage: Galatians 3:13*
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."
Questions
1. What is "the curse of the law"?
2. How did Christ redeem us from it?
3. What is the proper response to that redemption?
Practical help
Contrary to popular belief, the past isn't prologue.
In Galatians, the apostle Paul writes that Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law. That means that we're freed from all of the do-this-don't-do-that dictates of the Old Testament code. By dying for us on the cross, Christ bought us out of this rule-oriented worldview and forged a personal relationship with us.
Does that freedom mean anything — like surfing porn sites — goes? Absolutely not. Christ freed us from the law to give us the opportunity to freely glorify him with our actions. So porn is out. And with God's help, believers can execute 180s from smut-saturated histories.
As a bonus, there's no need to tote around guilt for past wrongdoing. As northeasterners would say, just fugghetaboutit! Instead we should concentrate on thanking Christ for paying the price to make our forgiveness — and forgetfulness — possible. Start with this sobering truth: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."
