Passage: Philippians 4:8*

Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things.

Questions

1. What words would you use to describe the things that occupy your thoughts?

2. Did you know that you can actually choose what they will be?

Practical help

The Apostle Paul urges his Christian readers to dwell upon or ponder things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, of good repute, excellent, or worthy of praise.

The good news here is that we are not helpless slaves to our thoughts — such as those that have to do with smut. By God’s grace we can learn to take control of our thoughts. With some practice and by His grace, we can choose to focus our thoughts on things like:

1. God’s amazing grace and love for us (Romans 5)

2. The majesty of God (Psalm 24)

3. All that God has made in grandeur and minute detail (Psalm 19:1, 111:3)

4. Harmonious relationships with others (Romans 12:9-21, John 13:34-35)

5. Serving someone in need (Philippians 2:3-8)

Choose one of these topics or think of one on your own today. Go ahead and give it a try. See if the Lord doesn’t give ample grace today to help change the kinds of things that are on your mind.
