Passage: 1 Peter 1:1-2*

1. Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen

2. according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, that you may obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in fullest measure.

Questions

1. What standards or examples do many people use to determine how they should live?

2. According to Peter, how well are we known by God the Father?

3. According to Peter, what does the Holy Spirit do for us? What is sanctification?

Practical help

There is so much to think about in these two verses. Where do we begin?

Let's start at the end. What should the result be of a dynamic life with God? Certainly it is not assured that we will have lives of ease. You see, the reason Peter is writing this letter is to reach the people who have fled the persecution in Jerusalem following the death of Christ and the birth of the church at Pentacost. No, life was not a bowl of cherries. Yet Peter's desire for these Christians is that they may experience grace and peace in fullest measure. This extends to you today.

"Fullest measure" to me means saturation of life with a knowledge that God loves us in spite of our gunk and bestows on us His grace. God loves us more that the messes we make. Now certainly when we make a mess of things, there are consequences, but God never stops loving us. We are under His grace.

A full measure of peace would be a calmness in the midst of turbulent events that reflects the fact that we are trusting God for what we need. When you choose pornography, you move away from experiencing life in God as it really can be — one filled with knowing how much God is loving you this moment and the extraordinary peace that the knowledge of this brings.
