Passage: Galatians 5:16-23*

16. But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.

17. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.

18. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.

19. Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20. idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions,

21. envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you just as I have forewarned you that those who practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

22. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

23. gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Questions

1. A healthy tomato plant will produce tomatoes. Will a healthy Christian necessarily produce the fruit of the Spirit?

2. What does a farmer do to promote healthy apple trees? What might a Christian do to promote spiritual health?

Practical help

Successful farmers fertilize and water and weed to promote a good crop. They allow the seed or the seedling to be nurtured in the healthiest environment, knowing that if impediments to health are removed, the seed will do the rest, producing beautiful fruit.

In the same way, Christians who want to produce the Spirit’s fruit will remove impediments to health so that the Spirit of God can produce His fruit in their lives. The seed (see 1 Peter 1:23* — "for you have been born again, not of seed which is perishable, but imperishable. That is, through the living and abiding word of God.") does its work if it placed into a healthy environment.

Want to see the Holy Spirit produce the most beautiful fruit in the world in your life? Fertilize with Scripture, water with fellowship with other Christians, and pull the weeds of "the deeds of the flesh" (vv. 19-21) - and watch the seed do its work!
