Passage: Hebrews 2:14*

Since then the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil;

Questions

1. What does this verse say Jesus has done to the devil?

2. Who are "the children" referred to in this verse?

Practical help

One of the titles given to the enemy of your soul is "The Tempter." Satan, the Devil, delights to tempt God’s people ("the children" of verse 14) with enticements to sin. However, the power the tempter wants you to believe he has has been broken.

In the realm of the spirit — the realm that you and I can’t see, hear, taste, touch or smell — Jesus conquered Satan. His death on the cross rendered Satan toothless in his spiteful battle with you. True, he may still "roar like a lion" (1 Peter 5:8), but he has no real authority over you to trip you up by sin.

Trust that what Hebrews 2:14 says is true. Satan is powerless over your life, and that because of the death of Jesus. When you are tempted to sin, accept it as the pitiful, dying efforts of a weaponless, defeated foe. And how should you respond to his powerless temptations? Martin Luther advised: (1). Worship, (2). Sing a song, and (3). Laugh!
