Passage: Luke 8:11-15*

11. "Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God.

12 "And those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they may not believe and be saved.

13. "And those on the rocky soil are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no firm root; they believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away.

14. "And the seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity.

15. "And the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance.

Questions

1. The parable Jesus is explaining in the passage above is often called, "The Parable of the Sower." It gives the four basic responses to God’s message people might give. Look through the passage and summarize those four responses.

 

2. What is the problem that the second person experiences, which leads him to fall away? (see v. 13)

 

Practical help

I live in South Texas where "rocky soil syndrome" is a common condition in home gardens. As a gardener myself, I know that if there is going to be a crop of beans, tomatoes, peppers, or squash, it will usually occur because the gardener has added compost to the soil and has watered liberally! Without the watering and the fertilizing, tender plants don’t have a chance in the blistering heat.

Just as soil needs help if it is going to produce a plant that bears fruit, so a soul needs nutrients if it is going to stand strong in the face of sexual temptation.
