Passage: Hebrews 2:17-18*

17. Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

18. For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.

Practical help

The church of the first couple of centuries had to do battle with a recurrent heretical belief that Jesus was fully God, but NOT man. Yet Scripture (Hebrews 2 and elsewhere) is clear that Jesus was both God and man. This dual aspect to His nature was necessary for Him to be able to come alongside people who are tempted to sin — and those who actually do sin.

Much of eXXit’s emphasis is to encourage men (and women) who are tempted to sin via the Internet’s porn sites to stay away from the awful stuff. And we sincerely hope that you are standing strong in the face of sexual temptation!

At the same time, we all have to know where to turn when we sin. We are never doomed to sin, and it is always within our power to NOT sin. However, sin of various kinds will plague us until we die. So, it is important, not only to do well, but also to know what to do when you are not doing well! Be assured that when you sin, there is no better Person to turn to than the Lord Jesus Christ.

He understands your temptation, having lived in the flesh. Every temptation you might experience, He knows firsthand. And, if He has become your High Priest (that is — if you have placed your faith in His death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead), He forgives you and wipes the slate clean. Now, with a conscience cleansed by the forgiving power of Jesus, stand strong in the face of sexual temptation!
