2. How can we apply that definition to pornography?
Practical help
"Saturday Night Live" comedian Dana Carvey nearly ruined the word "prudent" for modern times. In his dead-on impersonation of the first President Bush — "it wouldn't be prudent" — he captured the nasal, focus-group speech patterns that characterized Bush I. Carvey also almost gutted the word "prudent" of its deep moral and spiritual content. But only almost.
It's hard to keep a good word down. And prudence will make a comeback, if only to help those of us trying to turn away from pornography. After all, prudence instructs us to take the long view, to consider where our smut habit will take us.
The vista isn't pretty. Pornography instantly desensitizes us. It cheapens our view of sex. It corrupts our decision-making process. And it ultimately destroys our relationships with our loved ones. Prudence tells us to see these problems in advance — and to never court them in the first place.
Add prudence to your tool kit of porn fighting virtues. Just try to think of it without hearing Dana Carvey's Bushie whine.
