temptation.
Passage: Philippians 3:13-14*
13. Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead,
14. I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Questions
1. Have you stopped reaching forward?
2. Have your dreams evaporated with guilt over your struggles with pornography?
Practical help
Usually when a person first accepts Christ's free gift of salvation, there is a period of rest and rejoicing. But life doesn't stop there. In fact, you might say, your salvation is just the beginning. Yet so many people quickly lose their zeal for God and settle back into sinful living once again. One reason Christians find themselves in pornography is because they have settled back to "enjoy" life instead of pursuing God with all of their hearts, strength and minds.
Not Paul. As he writes these words, he is sitting in a Roman prison and doesn't know what the future holds for him. They might execute him or set him free…or he might remain in prison for years to come. He doesn't control that part of his life at all. Yet he is "pressing on" in his quest to live a life pleasing to the One who set him free from sin, fear and death. It is interesting to note that the Greek word used for "pressing on" is the same word that describes how intensely Paul pursued Christians to arrest them before his conversion. In both instances, it is the picture of a man on a mission.
Have you lost sight of the prize? Is your life dull and directionless, or are you passionately pursuing a sacred quest to know and love God more day by day? Perhaps it is time to stop and center yourself again.
