Passage:
Hebrews
11:32-34*
32. And
what more shall I say? For time will fail me if I tell
of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and
Samuel and the prophets,
33. who by faith
conquered kingdoms, performed acts of righteousness,
obtained promises, shut the mouths of
lions,
34. quenched the
power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from
weakness were made strong, became mighty in war, put
foreign armies to flight.
Questions
1. Hebrews 11 is sometimes
called "The Hall of Fame of Faith." Knowing what you
know of Samson's life (you might want to review the
eXXit studies for July 7-12, 2000), does it surprise
you to see Samson listed here?
2. What do you learn about God's
assessment of a person's life by virtue of the fact
that Samson is included in Hebrews 11?
Practical
help
There was something about
Samson that God valued very highly. That "something"
was at the core of who he was; he was a
believer. We don't see it come out very clearly
in the stories in Judges 13-16, but Hebrews 11 assures
us that it was there. And that faith is what God
values. Hebrews 11 says that "without faith it is
impossible to please God." Samson sinned, but had
faith and therefore pleased God. Yes, Samson blew it
many times in many ways, but his trust in God was
weightier than his sin.
As it was for Samson, so it is
for every one of us. We, too, will "blow it" many
times in many ways. We may fall down numerous times
when it comes to Internet porn. But, take heart. God
values our faith more than our morality. Lapses in
morality are not eternal show-stoppers. Lack of faith
is. The most important thing in life is trusting Jesus
Christ for eternal life and forgiveness of sins. (If
