Passage:
Jeremiah
9:23-26*
23. Thus says the LORD,
"Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not
the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man
boast of his riches;
24. but let him who boasts boast
of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am
the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice, and
righteousness on earth; for I delight in these
things," declares the LORD.
25. "Behold, the days are
coming," declares the LORD, "that I will punish all
who are circumcised and yet uncircumcised
Questions
1. Why shouldn't a wise
man boast of his wisdom (verse 23)?
2. Can a wise person count on
always acting wisely?
Practical
help
Wisdom is a great virtue
and one that God wants you to seek and use.
So why shouldn't the wise man
toot his own horn? After all, God provides an awful
lot of Scripture teaching us about wisdom. How to
learn it. How to discern it. How to apply it. How to
grow in it. So what's His beef with
boasting?
Well, one of the wisest things
you can learn and discern about wisdom is who owns
it.
Wisdom, like all truly good
things, is a gift from God. As soon as you start to
believe that you're achievements in gaining wisdom are
a result of your own efforts, you begin to set
yourself up for a big fall.
Maybe you count yourself wise,
but you can't understand why you're unable to cut
loose from that porn habit?
Take the lead from Jeremiah, and
acknowledge the source of wisdom.
Tomorrow start your day with a
new motto from Proverbs 3:7:
Do not be wise in your
own eyes; fear the LORD and turn away from
evil.*
