Passage: Jeremiah 9:23-25*

23. Thus says the LORD, "Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches;

24. but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things," declares the LORD.

25. "Behold, the days are coming," declares the LORD, "that I will punish all who are circumcised and yet uncircumcised--

Questions

1. Why shouldn't a mighty man boast of his might (verse 23)?

2. Can shear might keep you from falling prey to a titillating temptation?

Practical help

If you happen to be a guy, you usually learn at an early age that if all else fails, just gut it up and muscle through it. Might is always right. Right?

It's probably just a coincidence that might not only means powerful but also maybe. But I'll bet that ironic twist in meanings has humbled more than a few of us more than a few times.

Boasting and might seem to go hand in hand until might fails you in what your mind says ought to be an easy foe — a simple bout with a little sexual temptation. Has your victory slogan of "Might Wins!" changed into the tormenting question "Might Win?"

If so, Jeremiah's word to you here is stop relying on your brawn, and know that whatever "might" you have comes from knowing God. And there's no maybe when it comes to that might!
