Passage: Mark 10:23-26*
23. Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!"
24. And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, "Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God!
25. "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
26. And they were greatly astonished, saying among themselves, "Who then can be saved?"
27. But Jesus looked at them and said, "With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible."
Questions
1. Why were the disciples astonished that Jesus would say it was hard for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God?
2. What does entering the kingdom of God mean to you?
Practical help
Well if the popular or the rich or the clever or the ______________ (you fill in the blank) can't get into heaven, what's a person like me to do?
I'm not rich, or clever, or popular, or good looking or ____________ (fill in the blank). I thought they were that way because God liked them. And I thought all my problems indicate that God is less than pleased with me. And to top it off, I've got this secret sin. I know He is not pleased with me. In fact, I'm pretty sure He doesn't like me.
Does any of this sound familiar? Perhaps I've just replayed some of your common thoughts. If so, today's passage is really great news for you and me.
God is not limited by man's shortcomings. He's not even limited by what man thinks are his strong attributes — that being quite irrelevant in the heavenly scheme of things.
You have what it takes to become the person God and you both want you to become. Why? Because you can know the God of all possibilities if you choose to.
