Passage: I Kings 16:33*
Ahab also made an Asherah pole and did more to provoke the Lord, the God of Israel, to anger than did all the kings of Israel before him.
Questions
1. Why did Ahab make God so angry?
2. What can this verse teach us about pornography?
Practical help
Herman Melville named the "protagonist" of Moby-Dick after this biblical character. In the novel, Ahab roars across the sea seeking vengeance on the white whale that maimed him.
It doesn't take too much imagination to apply Melville's theme to our lives. Substitute a lust for blood with a lust for flesh, and our doomed crusade comes into focus: the pursuit of the next pornographic thrill.
Like Ahab, our quest will bring about our own destruction. Want proof? Ask your pastor for some stories about pornography's effect on relationships. Consider them cautionary tales for Christian Ahabs.
Ahab's Asherah pole and our porn habits are different facets of the same idolatry. God hates both because they break the first commandment, putting another god before the Lord of the universe.
Get your loyalties straight before your idol destroys you.
