Practical help
What do you expect from God?
If you came to faith believing promises of an easy Christian life, a stubborn porn habit can be more than discouraging. It can make you wonder if you were sold a false bill of goods.
If only evangelistic sermons included the wisdom of Job. Here was a man who followed God — and lost everything. Yet as the passage above shows, he stayed faithful despite his suffering.
Contrast Job's example to the suffering we endure because of an addiction to pornography. First off, we're to blame. Job did nothing to deserve the treatment he received, while we flout God's mercy to feed our lust. Next, we respond negatively to the consequences of our actions. Porn breeds a host of problems — evasiveness, sickness of heart, deadness of spirit — yet many of us blame God. "Why won't you take this away?" we say. Only to hear silence.
Job teaches us that the silence is enough. If we endure a spiritual dry spell, so be it. God has ordained one for us, and we should take comfort from him. As Job would say, "God has taken away." Settle into the void, recognizing that this is true faith. Then praise God as Job did.
